Heat Loss Hub exists because heat pump design got tangled up with heat pump selling — and homeowners have been paying for it ever since. We untangled it. We design; we don’t sell.
OUR STORY
From installation vans to design software
Heat Loss Hub was founded on 18 years of hands-on heating installation experience — real winters spent in real lofts, cellars and plant rooms across Yorkshire. Boilers, cylinders, radiators, underfloor circuits, and eventually heat pump after heat pump: we’ve installed the systems other people designed, and we’ve lived with the consequences of designs that were never quite right.
That experience taught us something the industry still struggles to admit: most heat pump problems are design problems. A heat pump that’s too big cycles itself to an early grave. Radiators sized for 70 °C water sulk at 45 °C. A heat loss calculation done from a satellite photo produces a system specified by hope. None of these are installation failures — the installer built exactly what the paperwork said. The paperwork was wrong.
So we moved from installing systems to designing them, and we made one decision that shapes everything: we would never install, never sell hardware and never take a commission. When we recommend a heat pump size, a radiator schedule or a flow temperature, the only person that recommendation serves is the one paying for the design — you.
Today, our independent heat pump designs are trusted by architects, local housing authorities, energy companies, heat pump manufacturers, builders and MCS accredited installers across England and Wales. The same rigour that professional clients demand goes into every homeowner design we produce.

Educate first
Our Advice Centre answers the questions sales visits dodge — with real numbers, real examples and no lead-capture tricks. An informed client makes better decisions, and better decisions make better heating systems. If reading our guides means you don’t need us, that’s a good outcome too.
PRINCIPLE 02
Design properly
Every design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation built from measured dimensions and verified constructions — never floor-area shortcuts. Heat pump selection comes from manufacturer performance data at your actual design conditions, not from the brochure’s headline figure.
PRINCIPLE 03
Recommend honestly
If your existing radiators will work, we’ll tell you. If a heat pump isn’t right for your home yet, we’ll tell you that too — and what to fix first. Independence isn’t a marketing line; it’s the entire reason this consultancy exists.

Practical experience × technical design
Plenty of consultancies can run heat loss software. Very few have spent 18 years finding out what happens when the theory meets a 1900s stone terrace with two feet of rubble-filled wall and a cellar full of surprises.
Our main competitive advantage is that combination: hands-on installation experience joined with detailed technical design knowledge. We know what installers need on a drawing because we’ve been the installer squinting at one. We know which design decisions cause problems on site because we’ve inherited them. And we know when a software default is quietly wrong because we’ve measured the real world it’s pretending to describe.
It’s also why our small network of vetted MCS installers will take a Heat Loss Hub design and build it without question or alteration — they know the thinking has been done.

A consultancy, not a call centre
When you send us an enquiry, it’s read by the designer who will actually survey your home and produce your calculations — not a sales team with a script and a target. Every property and heating system is different, so we prefer to understand your project before arranging a call.
That’s why our process starts with a short written enquiry rather than a phone number in a banner. It lets us review what stage your project is at, gather our thoughts properly, and make sure any conversation we do have is focused and useful. Once your enquiry has been reviewed, we’ll contact you by email with the most appropriate next step — and where a conversation would genuinely help, you’ll choose a convenient time using our online booking system.
It’s a calmer way to buy a heating system. We think calm is underrated.
