Altitude, gritstone and gable ends: the Huddersfield design brief
Two things dominate heat pump design around Huddersfield, and generic surveys miss both. First, altitude: the valley floor sits near 100 m but Marsden, Meltham and the Holme Valley tops climb well past 250 m, dragging the design temperature down toward −5 °C. A unit sized for “UK average” conditions is undersized for Wessenden Head and oversized for nowhere — location isn’t a detail here, it’s the brief.
Second, stone. Colne and Holme valley walls run 450–600 mm of gritstone and rubble fill — dramatically better thermally than the “solid wall” software default, as we explain in our old-house guide. Measured honestly, a Golcar weavers’ cottage or a Berry Brow terrace usually lands kilowatts below its assumption-based quotes. That difference is real money: a smaller unit, fewer radiator changes and a lower bill, every year.

“An 1898 stone end-terrace in the Colne Valley remains my favourite design lesson: refused by one national installer, quoted 16 kW by another — and measured at 9.2. Two chimneys and a loft hatch were carrying a kilowatt and a half of the loss. Six hundred pounds of draught-work later it’s an 8 kW design at 50 °C, and warmer than its coal years. That’s this valley in one house.”

Yes — it just needs designing for the real condition. We adjust the design temperature for altitude and exposure, verify unit output from manufacturer cold-weather data at that point, and size honestly. Scandinavian villages sit far higher and colder; the physics travels.
Better than the defaults suggest: thick stone loses less heat than the standard “solid wall” assumption and its thermal mass suits steady low-temperature running. The catch is that only measurement gives you credit for it — which is rather our whole point.
