Radiators & heat pumps: output decides, not appearance
Heat pumps do not automatically require every radiator in a property to be replaced. The correct approach is to assess each room individually. A radiator is suitable if it can provide enough heat to match the room heat loss at the proposed design flow temperature.

How much heat can this emitter actually deliver at the water temperature the system is designed to use?
Radiator design starts with the room heat loss
Every room in a property has its own heating requirement. A proper room-by-room heat loss calculation establishes how many watts of heat are needed to maintain the target room temperature during the design outside condition.
This is why radiator upgrades should not be based on rules such as “Replace every radiator with one twice the size.” Some existing radiators may already have more than enough capacity. Others may only need a modest upgrade.
Radiator output changes with water temperature
Radiator output is not fixed. A radiator produces more heat when the water passing through it is hotter and less heat when the water temperature falls. Heat pumps are usually most efficient when operating at lower water temperatures. The radiator itself has not changed. The operating conditions have.
What does ΔT mean for radiators?
Radiator manufacturers commonly quote output at a particular temperature difference, often described as ΔT50. A radiator rated at 2,000 W at ΔT50 will not normally deliver 2,000 W when operated at lower heat-pump temperatures. The relevant figure is the corrected radiator output at the chosen water temperature.
Corrected output is the number that matters
The shape or marketing description does not determine suitability. The output does. This is the same principle whether the radiator is horizontal, vertical, single panel, double panel, triple panel, column style or decorative.
Do all my radiators need replacing?
No. In many properties, some existing radiators are already oversized compared with the room heat loss. Those radiators may work perfectly well at lower heat-pump temperatures. A proper design therefore produces a room-by-room radiator schedule rather than a blanket replacement list.
Can my existing radiators work with a heat pump?
Often, yes. The design needs to compare the corrected output of each existing radiator with the room heat loss. Room heat loss 1,100 W with existing radiator corrected output 1,250 W may be perfectly adequate. Room heat loss 1,400 W with corrected output 850 W would need improvement. The answer depends on the individual room.

Other emitter types
Fan-assisted radiators use small fans to move room air across the heat exchanger, increasing output where wall space is limited. Vertical radiators can work perfectly well; suitability depends on corrected output. Towel rails deserve particular attention — a towel rail may provide enough heat on a boiler system but much less at heat-pump temperatures. Column and traditional radiators can also work — the important factor is output rather than appearance.
Radiators and pipework need to be considered together
A radiator cannot deliver heat unless enough hot water can reach it. A larger radiator connected to an unsuitable hydraulic circuit may still fail to deliver the expected output.
Should heat pump radiators feel hot?
Not necessarily. The important question is: is the room reaching and maintaining its target temperature? If it is, the emitter is doing its job. Heat-pump heating should generally be judged by room comfort rather than how hot the radiator feels.
"Oversized" radiators can be useful
An unnecessarily oversized heat pump can create problems. An oversized radiator, however, can be beneficial — more emitter surface area can allow the same output using lower-temperature water. There is no special magic “heat pump radiator”: the design should follow the performance data rather than the marketing name.
