Heat Pump Flow Temperature & Controls

Flow temperature is one of the most important design and operating parameters in a heat-pump system. It affects efficiency, radiator sizing, heat-pump capacity, and how the whole system should be controlled.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The lower the water temperature a heat pump has to produce, the more efficiently it generally runs. But lower flow temperatures require larger emitters or better-insulated properties. Flow temperature sits at the centre of almost every other design decision.

What is flow temperature?

Flow temperature is the temperature of the water leaving the heat pump on its way to the radiators or underfloor heating. It is chosen at the design stage — not fixed by the equipment — and should be the lowest temperature that still lets every room meet its heat loss.

Why lower flow temperatures improve efficiency

A heat pump works harder to lift heat to a higher temperature. The smaller the gap between outside air temperature and flow temperature, the less work the compressor has to do, and the higher the COP tends to be.

Flow temperature and emitter sizing are linked

Choosing a lower flow temperature means radiators need to be larger, or the room needs underfloor heating, to deliver the same heat output. This is why flow temperature, radiator schedule and heat loss should be decided together, not separately.

Weather compensation and heating curves

Weather compensation automatically reduces flow temperature as outside temperature rises, following a heating curve. This means the heat pump only produces water as hot as the weather actually requires, rather than running at a single fixed flow temperature all winter.

Room influence, thermostats and TRVs

A room thermostat can add “room influence” on top of the heating curve, nudging flow temperature up or down based on actual room conditions. TRVs fine-tune individual rooms but should not be used to fight a poorly set heating curve.

Zoning and setback temperatures

Heavy setbacks — turning the heating off, then demanding a fast recovery — work against a heat pump’s steady, low-temperature operating style. Long, stable run times generally suit heat pumps better than the on/off patterns typical of boiler control.

Long, gentle heat-pump run times are a feature, not a fault. A heat pump running quietly for many hours at low output is often behaving exactly as designed — the goal is steady comfort, not the short, powerful bursts typical of a boiler.
