Flat country, sharply divided economics
Doncaster is kind to heat pumps in ways its residents rarely hear about. The borough lies low and relatively sheltered — design conditions around −2.9 °C, among the mildest in Yorkshire — which trims every calculated heat loss compared with the Pennine towns. The housing helps too: the classic Doncaster semi (1930s through 1960s, cavity-walled, since double-glazed) and the compact colliery rows of Armthorpe, Edlington, Rossington and Askern both measure out smaller than their reputations, provided someone actually verifies the cavity fill and counts the party walls.
The sharp divide is fuel. In town, mains gas keeps the running-cost comparison honest but modest. Out in the villages — Tickhill, Bawtry, Austerfield, Fishlake, the farm lanes toward the Trent — oil tanks and LPG cylinders rule, and there the arithmetic turns emphatic: 30–50% running-cost savings are routine, and from July 2026 the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £9,000 for exactly these homes. Doncaster’s village belt is, frankly, some of the best heat pump economics in England — it just needs designing properly.
