Altitude is Sheffield's secret design variable — and nobody's quoting for it
Sheffield city centre sits around 60 m above sea level. Crookes and Walkley climb past 200 m; Lodge Moor, Dore and Stocksbridge push higher still, onto the gritstone edge of the Peak. Across that range the sensible design temperature shifts by two full degrees or more — which changes a calculated heat loss by 8–12% before a single wall is considered. A survey that treats S1 and S17 as the same climate has already missed by a radiator or two. Ours doesn’t: every design is calculated at your postcode’s altitude-adjusted condition, from ≈ −3 °C in the valley to −5 °C on the western edge.
The stock is just as varied. Stone-fronted terraces on the west side hills (thick walls that outperform their “solid wall” default — see the old-house guide), classic brick semis through Hillsborough, Firth Park and Handsworth, substantial Ecclesall and Nether Edge villas, and post-war estates from Parson Cross to Gleadless. Gable ends, rear yards, and occasionally raised platforms on split-level plots — chosen with clearances, condensate drainage and neighbour acoustics resolved on the drawing. Sheffield’s slopes complicate installation, not feasibility; the design’s job is making installation day boring.
Homes inside the National Park boundary (Bradfield, parts of Stocksbridge fringe) face tighter siting expectations — handled with the same drawings and acoustic documentation we produce for conservation areas. Most of Sheffield proper is standard permitted-development territory, conditions permitting.
