Usually — permitted development covers many cases subject to siting and noise conditions, and where consent is needed, a proper siting drawing and acoustic assessment does the persuading. Listed buildings need consent and a more bespoke strategy; we design those with your architect.

Rear yards and side returns solve most cases; occasionally a front-garden or flank-wall position wins on acoustics. We draw the options to scale with clearances and sound levels, so the decision is made on paper rather than on installation day.

Yes — England-wide rules: £7,500 via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, rising to £9,000 for oil and LPG homes from July 2026, claimed by your MCS installer. The Vale’s oil villages are among the strongest arithmetic we see; method in the oil comparison.

Often, yes. Listed building consent is a higher bar than conservation area approval, but the objection is nearly always about what is visible from the public realm and what fabric gets cut into — rarely the heat pump itself. Solve the siting sympathetically, route pipework through existing penetrations where possible, and the case is usually winnable. What sinks applications is submitting them without acoustic data or sightline drawings, so we produce both as part of the design pack.

This is the most common York constraint and it is a design question rather than a dead end. The options are a small rear yard with the unit raised off the ground for airflow, a side return where boundary distances allow, or occasionally a flat-roof position where the structure takes it. Each has an acoustic consequence for you and for your neighbour, and each has a defrost drainage consequence in a narrow enclosed space. We model it rather than guess, because a unit boxed into a two-metre yard behaves very differently from the same unit in open air.

No, but it changes where things sit. The heat pump itself, the cylinder, the controls and the electrical isolation all want to be above the recorded flood level rather than at the traditional low-level positions. That is a straightforward design decision if it is made at the drawing stage and an expensive retrofit if it is discovered afterwards.
