Ilkley’s signature homes — the stone villas and semis of Parish Ghyll, Kings Road and the Grove Estate, the terraces between the town centre and the Cow & Calf — share a profile that confuses standard surveys three ways at once. Ceiling heights near three metres add volume that floor-area shortcuts never see. Wall thicknesses of 450–600 mm perform far better than the “solid wall” default assumes. And elevation matters: the town sits at 100–170 m with homes climbing the moor side beyond, so design temperatures range from ≈ −3.5 °C by the river to −4.5 °C and windier exposure at the top of Wells Road.
Put those three corrections together and measured designs routinely land two to four kilowatts away from assumption-based quotes — in either direction, which is the truly expensive part. No — we design at your actual altitude-adjusted condition (down to −4.5 °C on the moor side) and verify unit output from manufacturer cold-climate data at that point. Heat pumps heat far harsher places than Wharfedale; they just need sizing for Wharfedale rather than for Watford.
Frequently — column radiators get the same output check as everything else, and generous period sizing often passes at 48–52 °C. Full method in the radiator guide.
Solvable with design: discreet siting, documented acoustics and scale drawings. We produce exactly that pack, and planners respond well to it.
None — Ilkley, Addingham, Burley and Menston are standard coverage from our West Yorkshire base.
Yes, and it is routinely missed. Exposure raises infiltration losses and effectively worsens the design condition compared with a sheltered property at the same altitude — a house catching the wind off the moor is not the same thermal proposition as one tucked behind the town. A postcode lookup cannot see that. We take the aspect, the shelter and the height into account rather than pulling a single figure for LS29 and applying it from the river to the moor edge.
It adds work rather than difficulty. Tall stacked properties stratify — heat collects at the top and the cellar stays cold — which makes room-by-room calculation genuinely necessary rather than a nicety. Cellars also raise a practical question about where the cylinder and plant live, and about whether an unheated cellar should be treated as an external boundary or a buffer. Both change the ground-floor numbers noticeably, so we settle it on site rather than assuming.
Not usually. Original windows are a line in the heat loss calculation, not a veto on the project. Draught-proofing, working shutters and heavy curtains close more of the gap than people expect, and secondary glazing closes most of the rest without touching the original joinery. What the calculation gives you is the number: exactly how many watts each option buys, so you can decide what is worth doing on a house you value rather than being told to rip out the windows.
