Installing a Heat Pump During a Renovation or Extension

If you are renovating a property, building an extension or opening floors and walls, it can be one of the best times to prepare the heating system for a heat pump.

Existing radiators, pipework and insulation do not automatically need replacing.

But if something does need changing, it is usually much easier to do it while the building work is already underway.

The key is to design the heating system around the finished property, rather than designing a heat pump for the house as it stands today.

Design for the House You Are Creating — Not the House You Have Today

A renovation can change the heat loss of a property significantly.

You may be:

  • adding an extension
  • replacing windows
  • upgrading wall insulation
  • insulating the roof
  • changing floors
  • opening rooms up
  • altering ventilation
  • converting a garage
  • adding bathrooms
  • changing the way different parts of the house are used

If the heating system is designed before those changes are taken into account, the result may be based on a building that will no longer exist.

A heat pump design should reflect the property as it will be when the work is finished.

That means considering:

  • final floor area
  • final room layout
  • planned insulation
  • final glazing
  • ventilation
  • intended room temperatures
  • emitter changes
  • how the old and new parts of the property will work together

This is one of the biggest advantages of planning the heating before the renovation progresses too far.

A Renovation Gives You Opportunities a Normal Retrofit Does Not

Many heat pump retrofit problems are not technically difficult.

They are simply expensive or disruptive because they are discovered too late.

If floors, ceilings and walls are already being opened, a renovation can give you the chance to improve the heating system without creating another major round of work later.

Pipework

Existing heating pipes may be perfectly suitable.

Or they may restrict the water flow needed by the new system.

If pipework does need changing, doing it while floors and walls are already open is usually far easier than returning after the renovation is complete.

Radiators

Some existing radiators may already be large enough for heat pump operation.

Others may need upgrading.

If rooms are being redecorated anyway, this can be the ideal time to make those changes without creating another separate project later.

Underfloor Heating

If floors are already being replaced or rebuilt, underfloor heating becomes much easier to consider.

That does not mean every renovated property should have UFH.

But if you want it, the renovation is often the easiest time to install it properly.

Hot Water Cylinder

A renovation may create a new:

  • utility room
  • plant cupboard
  • airing cupboard
  • garage plant area

This can provide much better options for a heat pump cylinder than trying to squeeze one into an unsuitable existing space.

Heat Pump Location

Extensions, landscaping and external alterations can all affect where the heat pump can sensibly go.

It is much easier to agree the location before the external works are finished.

Electrical Work

If the consumer unit or electrical system is already being altered, the heat pump supply and associated equipment can be included in the same plan.

That can be much neater than adding new cable routes afterwards.

Should I Improve the Insulation Before Installing a Heat Pump?

Not every home needs a complete insulation upgrade before a heat pump can work.

The important question is how much heat the finished property will lose and what water temperatures are required to keep it warm.

Improving insulation can reduce the heat required by the property.

That may allow:

  • a smaller heat pump
  • lower heating flow temperatures
  • smaller radiator upgrades
  • lower water flow requirements
  • lower running costs

But the important point during a renovation is timing.

If you already plan to improve insulation, those improvements should be reflected in the heating design before the heat pump is selected.

Otherwise, the system may be sized for the unrenovated building rather than the property you are creating.

What If Only Part of the House Is Being Extended?

This is a common situation.

You might be building a highly insulated extension onto an older property.

The extension itself may need relatively little heat.

The original part of the house may still represent most of the total heating load.

If one heat pump will serve the whole property, the design should consider:

existing house + completed extension

not just the extension in isolation.

The room-by-room heat loss should therefore reflect the finished condition of every part of the property.

That gives a much clearer picture of:

A well-insulated extension does not automatically make the original heating system suitable for a heat pump.

The whole system still needs to work together.

Underfloor Heating in the Extension and Radiators in the Existing House?

Yes.

That can be a very practical arrangement.

For example:

Extension: underfloor heating  ·  Existing house: correctly sized radiators

There is no requirement for every room to use the same type of emitter.

The important thing is that both parts of the heating system are designed around compatible operating conditions.

The design should consider:

  • room heat loss
  • UFH output
  • radiator output
  • flow temperature
  • water flow
  • controls
  • zoning

The objective is not to make every part of the system identical.

It is to make every part work together.

Existing Radiators — Keep Them or Change Them?

A renovation is not a reason to automatically replace every radiator.

Each radiator should be checked against the heat loss of the room it serves and the heating flow temperature the system is being designed around.

The result may be:

  • keep the existing radiator
  • replace it with a larger conventional radiator
  • change to a higher-output panel radiator
  • use a fan-assisted emitter
  • install underfloor heating instead

Some homes need several radiator changes.

Others need very few.

The right answer should come from the calculations rather than a blanket rule.

If you are redecorating anyway, any necessary upgrades can often be incorporated with much less disruption.

Existing Pipework Can Influence the Design

This is one of the areas where heat pump designs can differ significantly.

Heat pumps often move higher volumes of water than traditional boiler systems.

That does not mean every home needs completely new pipework.

But it does mean the existing system should be checked.

Things that may matter include:

  • pipe diameter
  • pipe length
  • number of branches
  • microbore sections
  • flow rate
  • pressure loss
  • design temperature difference

Some systems can continue using much of the existing pipework.

Others may need targeted upgrades.

In some cases the system may be designed around a larger temperature difference to reduce the required flow rate where pipework cannot practically be replaced.

The important thing is to check what the pipework can actually carry.

Do not replace good pipework just because someone says “heat pumps need bigger pipes everywhere”.

But equally, do not assume old pipework will automatically deliver the flow required.

Heat Pump Location and Extension Design

An extension can accidentally remove the best location for the heat pump.

A rear wall that was previously ideal may disappear.

New patio doors may be added.

The unit may end up closer to a neighbouring window.

The pipe route to the plant area may become much longer.

This is why the heat pump location should be considered before the extension design becomes fixed.

Think about:

  • noise
  • airflow
  • drainage
  • defrost water
  • servicing
  • access
  • visual impact
  • pipe length
  • nearby windows
  • boundaries

The heat pump should not simply go wherever there happens to be space left at the end.

Cylinder and Plant Space

A heat pump installation often needs more plant space than a simple boiler replacement.

A renovation can be a good opportunity to create a proper location for:

The cylinder location should also consider:

  • hot water distribution
  • primary pipework length
  • discharge route
  • access
  • servicing
  • future replacement

It is much easier to make these decisions before cupboards, joinery and finished walls are installed.

Renovating an Older Property

Older properties can absolutely be suitable for heat pumps.

The age of the house itself is not the deciding factor.

What matters more is:

  • heat loss
  • insulation
  • emitter sizes
  • pipework
  • required heating flow temperature
  • available equipment locations

A renovation can actually make an older property much easier to adapt because you may already be improving the fabric and heating system.

The design should reflect the finished building rather than relying on assumptions based purely on age. If you are still at the stage of asking whether your house is suitable at all, start there.

Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas

Historic properties may require additional consideration.

External equipment, changes to building fabric and visible pipework can sometimes be subject to additional planning or conservation requirements.

If the property is listed or located within a conservation area, it is worth identifying this at the beginning of the project.

That gives more time to consider suitable heat pump locations and installation routes before the renovation progresses too far.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme During a Renovation

Renovating a home does not automatically prevent it from qualifying for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

If the project involves replacing an eligible fossil fuel or electric heating system and meets the current scheme requirements, funding may be available.

Grant values and eligibility rules can change, so the current position should always be checked before relying on the grant within the renovation budget.

The Order I Would Make the Decisions

A good renovation heat pump project is much easier when the decisions are made in the right sequence.

  1. Establish the Final Building Specification

    What will the property actually be when the renovation is complete?

    Consider:

    • insulation
    • glazing
    • floor area
    • extension
    • room layout
    • ventilation
  2. Calculate the Room-by-Room Heat Loss

    Use the finished building specification rather than the property as it stands today.

  3. Decide the Emitter Strategy

    For each room, decide whether to:

    • retain the existing radiator
    • upgrade the radiator
    • install UFH
    • use another suitable emitter
  4. Establish the Heating Flow Temperature

    The emitter design helps determine the water temperature the heating system requires.

  5. Check the Pipework

    Can the existing heating pipework carry the required water flow?

    If not, decide what can realistically be changed while the renovation is underway.

  6. Select the Heat Pump

    Once the heating requirement and system temperatures are understood, the heat pump can be selected against the actual design conditions.

    It is also the point at which a heat pump installation quote becomes something you can meaningfully compare.

  7. Finalise the Cylinder, Primary Pipe Routes and Electrics

    Coordinate the major services before walls, floors and cupboards are closed up.

  8. Coordinate With the Build Team

    Make sure the builder, plumber, electrician, UFH supplier and heat pump installer are all working from the same assumptions.

    That can prevent different contractors designing different parts of the same heating system independently.

Common Renovation Heat Pump Mistakes

Calculating the Heat Loss Before Planned Insulation Improvements

If the building fabric changes, the design heat loss may change too. Design around the finished specification.

Designing Only the Extension

If the heat pump serves the whole house, the whole house needs to be considered.

Ordering Underfloor Heating Before Room Heat Loads Are Known

UFH layout, pipe spacing and operating temperature should follow the room requirement.

Replacing Every Radiator Without Checking

Some may already be suitable. Calculate first.

Keeping Restricted Pipework Simply Because It Is Already There

If the renovation gives you an easy opportunity to improve a problem section, consider doing it while access is available.

Replacing All Pipework Because “Heat Pumps Need Bigger Pipes”

That can be equally unnecessary. Check the actual flow requirement and pressure loss.

Choosing the Heat Pump Position After the Extension Is Built

Consider the location while the external design can still be changed.

Forgetting Cylinder and Plant Space

A technically good system can become awkward very quickly if there is nowhere sensible for the equipment.

Closing Floors and Walls Before Pipe and Cable Routes Are Agreed

Planning those routes early can save significant disruption.

Letting Every Contractor Design Their Own Part

The heating system needs to work as one system. One set of design assumptions — which is what independent design provides — makes coordination much easier.

Renovation Projects Are Where Compromises Tend to Appear

In real design work, some of the most avoidable problems happen because the heating design starts after the renovation decisions have already been made.

The new extension has been beautifully designed around underfloor heating, but the original house has hardly been considered.

The cylinder cupboard has already been built before anyone checks what cylinder needs to fit inside it.

The existing microbore pipework has been buried behind new finishes without checking whether it can deliver the required flow.

Or the best heat pump position disappears because that part of the garden is incorporated into the extension.

None of these issues are especially difficult when they are identified early.

They become expensive when the renovation is already complete.

The aim is simple: use the renovation to remove compromises, not build new ones into the heating system.
