I have read a lot of bad quotes. The worst are rarely dishonest — they are vague, and vagueness is where the cost lives.
The Quint sharpens this. One outdoor unit doing wet heating, hot water and air-to-air cooling means a quote spanning two disciplines normally priced by two different companies. If yours does not read like it was written by someone who understood both, it probably was not.

A quote should be more than an equipment list
The standard I would hold any quote to is not a high one: a stranger with the right qualifications should be able to build the system from the paperwork.
An equipment list tells you what is going in. A quote tells you what the system will do, why that equipment will do it, what has been assumed and excluded, and who is responsible when something is wrong.
None of this is extra work for a competent installer — it is the work they did to reach the price. If they cannot show it, they either did it and will not share it, or never did it. The second is far more common, and most of it belongs in the design survey, which comes before a firm price.

The design details a quote must show
Three things carry the system. Everything else is fitting.
Heat loss, room by room. Not a whole-house figure, not floor area times a factor, not last winter’s gas bill converted into kilowatts. Assumptions are where these go wrong: an installer who assumes cavity insulation you do not have will size a system that never quite gets there. Oversizing is not the safe option people think — it cycles, it wears, and you pay for it daily. Ask for the input data, not just the answer.
Design flow temperature. The most consequential number in the quote, and the one most often missing. Samsung publishes a range up to 65 °C, and I treat a high available flow temperature as headroom, not a target. Every degree you take off improves efficiency for the life of the system, and the trade-off is emitter size — which is exactly what a design is for. A quote with no stated flow temperature has not made the decision, so the installer makes it on commissioning day, high, because high always works.
Emitter sizing at that temperature. At realistic heat pump flow temperatures a radiator’s real output falls well below its catalogue figure, so “your radiators will be fine” is a claim requiring arithmetic — and that arithmetic is a table you can be handed. Where a radiator does not make it, the quote should say what replaces it and price it. This is the most common failure I see.
Cooling needs the same discipline: a load per room, units selected against it, and an honest statement of which rooms are not being cooled. What drives the final number is on the cost page.
CONSIDERING HEATING AND COOLING TOGETHER?
Before committing to one system or two, find out what your home actually needs.
Grant and certification checks
Never accept a quote with a grant already deducted unless eligibility is confirmed for the exact configuration you are buying.
BUS currently pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump and £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump, with an additional £1,500 until March 2027 for off-gas-grid properties on oil or LPG. The Quint does both jobs from one unit. Which category applies is genuinely open, grants are not available for hybrid systems, and no installer settles this by assertion. Get three answers in writing:
- Which category are you claiming under, and on what basis? Not “the heat pump grant”.
- Is this exact model and configuration confirmed eligible? Product and installer certification differ and you need both — check the MCS position yourself.
- If the claim fails or pays less, who covers the difference? If it is you, the headline price was never the price.
Installer responsibility — who does which half
This is the part most likely to go wrong in practice.
One outdoor unit is doing wet-side plumbing — cylinder, emitters, hydraulics, controls — and F-gas refrigerant work: pipework, pressure testing, evacuation, charging, leak testing. Those are usually different trades and often different companies. Plenty of excellent heat pump installers have never run refrigerant pipework to a wall unit; plenty of excellent air conditioning engineers have never produced a room-by-room heat loss calculation.
Ask directly, and write down the answers:
- Who does the wet side, and who does the refrigerant side? Company names, not “our team”.
- Are they qualified for both? MCS scope for the heating and hot water work, F-gas certification for the refrigerant work. Ask for numbers.
- If it is subcontracted, who holds my contract? You want one accountable party.
- Who is responsible if the two halves do not work together? Not a failed part — the integration.
Press on that last one. Integration faults get passed between subcontractors while you stand in the middle. More: installer requirements.
Red flags
Any one of these is a reason to slow down. Two or more, and I would get another quote.
- No heat loss calculation. Everything downstream is guesswork. Disqualifying on its own.
- “Your radiators will be fine” with no outputs at the design flow temperature. Fine according to what?
- A grant deducted before eligibility is confirmed, with no term covering failure.
- No model references. “Samsung EHS Quint system” is a brochure, not a specification.
- Pressure to sign today. Discounts that expire this week are a sales technique. Good installers have a waiting list.
- Cooling with no cooling load calculation. Someone guessed, and you find out which rooms in August.
- No mention of F-gas anywhere. Ask who exactly is doing the refrigerant work.
- A price with no exclusions. Everything has exclusions. These are being saved for later.
- Anyone certain the Quint is MCS certified or BUS eligible. I cannot confirm either. That certainty is a claim about the salesperson, not the product.
Most bad quotes come from decent tradespeople who are busy. But it is your house and your running costs, and the polite form of scepticism is asking for the paperwork.

What is the most important thing on a heat pump quote?
The room-by-room heat loss calculation, the design flow temperature, and the emitter schedule that follows. Without those three, nothing else can be checked.
Should I accept a quote with no heat loss calculation?
No. The price was estimated rather than designed, and it will move once the work begins.
How many quotes should I get?
At least three, and compare the designs rather than the totals. Different flow temperatures mean they are not quoting the same system.
Can an installer deduct the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant from my quote?
Only if eligibility is confirmed for the exact product and configuration, and the contract states who pays should the claim fail.
Do I need an F-gas qualified engineer for the cooling side?
Refrigerant work is regulated and needs qualified personnel and a certified company. If F-gas is never mentioned, raise it before signing.
What if my quote lists no exclusions?
Ask for them in writing — making good, flooring, electrical upgrades, scaffolding. No exclusions is less specific, not more generous.
Should I wait for MCS and grant status before getting quotes?
Do the design work now. Heat loss, emitter sizing, hot water demand and cooling loads do not change with the product you buy. Status is tracked on the Samsung EHS Quint hub.
