What Is the Samsung EHS Quint?

The Samsung EHS Quint is an outdoor heat pump unit that Samsung presents as doing three jobs from one box: heating your radiators or underfloor heating, heating your hot water cylinder, and running proper air-conditioning units for cooling. Most heat pumps do the first two. The Quint sets out to do all three, and to recover heat from the cooling into your hot water.

That is the idea in two sentences. The rest of this page unpacks it, because there is a lot of jargon in there and most of it gets used loosely.

Eighteen years in this industry, and I have a heat pump on my own house. I also have separate air conditioning, because those were two different problems when I designed my system. So a product that closes the gap has my attention. For the full picture, start at the Samsung EHS Quint hub.

The air-to-water side — radiators and underfloor heating

Air-to-water means the heat pump takes heat out of the outside air and puts it into water. That water goes round your house to your emitters — the things in each room that actually give off heat. Radiators are emitters. So are underfloor heating pipes and fan convectors.

This is not far off what your boiler does. Your boiler burns gas to warm water and pumps it to radiators. A heat pump moves heat in from outside instead of burning anything. Same delivery, different way of making the heat.

The difference is temperature. A boiler will happily send water out at 70 °C or more. A heat pump works best lower, which usually means bigger radiators or underfloor heating.

Samsung’s published leaving water temperatures are 15–65 °C in heating and 5–25 °C in cooling. Sixty-five is high for a heat pump and looks reassuring on a spec sheet. Do not read too much into it. Your efficiency comes from the temperature you actually run at, set by your heat loss and your emitters — not by the badge on the outdoor unit.

Domestic hot water — the cylinder

Domestic hot water just means the water coming out of your taps and shower, as opposed to the water circulating round your heating.

If you have a combi boiler, you probably have no cylinder at all — the boiler heats water on demand as you turn the tap. Heat pumps do not work like that. A heat pump needs a cylinder: an insulated tank it warms up over a period, ready for when you want it. On the Quint that works as it would on any air-to-water heat pump.

None of which removes the design work. Cylinder size, reheat time, location and legionella provision still need doing properly. Too small is a daily irritation. Too big sits there wasting energy.

The air-to-air side — this is proper air conditioning

This is where the Quint differs from a normal heat pump.

Air-to-air means heat is moved between outside air and inside air directly, with no water involved. Refrigerant — the fluid that carries heat around inside any heat pump or fridge — is piped from the outdoor unit to indoor units in your rooms, which blow air across a coil. In summer they take heat out of the room; in winter they can put heat in. That is exactly how air conditioning works, because that is what it is.

You may have been told a standard heat pump can cool too. Some can, by sending chilled water round your existing heating circuit. It sounds elegant. In practice it has three problems.

Condensation. Every room has a dew point — the temperature at which moisture in the air condenses onto a cold surface. Take a cold drink from the fridge on a humid day and watch the glass fog up. Radiators and underfloor pipes are not built to collect and drain condensation, so the water in them must stay above dew point. That limits how cold you can go, and needs controls most installations do not have. Get it wrong and you get damp floors and walls.

Actual cooling capacity. Because the water cannot go very cold, the effect is mild. Underfloor cooling takes the edge off a room at best. Radiators are the wrong emitter entirely: cool air sinks, and radiators rely on warm air rising. If you expect the feeling of an air-conditioned hotel room, you will be disappointed.

Zoning. With a wet system you cool whatever the heating circuit serves. With air-to-air units you cool the bedroom and leave the kitchen alone, on demand. You also get dehumidification, which is much of why air conditioning feels comfortable rather than just cold.

So the Quint’s cooling is the real thing — the most useful thing to understand about this product. More on the Quint air conditioning page.

One thing I will not tell you, because it is not published: how many indoor units you can connect. Samsung describes support for multiple indoor unit configurations, but no UK combination matrix or unit count has been published that we can find.

Heat recovery — good idea, unquantified benefit

Heat recovery here means something simple. When the air-to-air side cools your rooms it is pulling heat out of them, and that heat has to go somewhere. Normally it gets dumped outside. Samsung describes the Quint diverting it into the hot water tank instead. Put plainly: on a hot day, cooling your bedroom helps heat your shower water. Samsung’s own wording is “simultaneous heating and cooling across air-to-air and air-to-water applications while also producing domestic hot water”.

That is good engineering and I like it. But I am going to be careful here, and you should be too. What it is worth to your household depends on how much cooling you run, when, and against how much hot-water demand. There is no UK operating data yet, so nobody — including Heat Loss Hub — can put a credible savings figure on it. If someone hands you one, ask where it came from.

That right-hand column matters more than people expect. A heat pump plus a separate air-conditioning system is proven, available today, from many manufacturers, with settled grant treatment. The Quint does not have to beat doing nothing. It has to beat that. Where it could win is on outdoor space, planning and noise, one system with one point of contact, and the heat recovery. Where it loses today is on certainty.

Samsung’s GB pages list three outdoor units at the time of writing, all using R32 refrigerant.

The UK caveats, briefly

Understanding the product and being able to buy it are two different things.

We have not found an MCS Product Directory listing under the EHS Quint name or those model references — see Is the Samsung EHS Quint MCS certified?. Boiler Upgrade Scheme treatment is an open question, because the Quint does both air-to-water and air-to-air work and those attract different grant amounts — see the Boiler Upgrade Scheme page. No confirmed UK on-sale date and no published UK installed price have been found, and a live product page is not the same as UK availability. Frequently Asked Questions

Both, and that is not a dodge. A heat pump and an air conditioner are the same machine working in different directions. The Quint is an air-to-water heat pump that can also run air-to-air indoor units.

That is the intention — it is designed as the heat source for a whole house, feeding radiators or underfloor heating and a hot water cylinder. Whether it suits your house depends on your heat loss and emitters, which needs calculating, not assuming.

Yes. Heat pumps do not heat water on demand the way a combi boiler does. If you are coming off a combi you will need space for a cylinder, and that is one of the bigger practical decisions in the project.

No. An air-to-air heat pump only does the air side — heating and cooling through indoor units, no radiators, no hot water. The Quint includes air-to-air capability but also does the water side. That distinction matters, because the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays different amounts for the two.

Samsung describes simultaneous heating and cooling, with heat from the cooling side diverted into the hot water tank. How much that saves in a real UK home is not yet established.

Not published. Samsung refers to multiple indoor unit configurations, but no UK combination matrix, unit count or pipework limits have been found. Confirm it against Samsung’s approved combinations before designing around it.
