Around two hundred listed buildings sit inside Otley’s conservation area, on a street pattern laid out in the thirteenth century, built almost entirely from the gritstone quarried off the Chevin above the town. That is an unusual level of granularity for a town this size, and it means the answer to “where can the outdoor unit go?” genuinely differs street by street.
The building stock behind those designations is coarse Chevin gritstone with stone or slate roofs, vertical window openings with stone lintels and cills, timber sliding sashes and panelled doors. Roughly ten buildings predate 1700. Most of the rest is eighteenth-century stone, Victorian and Edwardian terracing, and housing built for the people who worked the mills.
None of that prevents a heat pump. It does mean the design has to arrive with drawings a Leeds City Council conservation officer can assess without a site visit — sightlines, acoustic distances, unit siting, and a fabric strategy that respects a wall built to breathe rather than one built to be sealed.

THE VALLEY FLOOR

Otley sits in a hollow between moor and river, and its microclimate is not the same as the Leeds postcode it shares. Cold air drains off the Chevin and pools on the valley floor on still winter nights, while properties partway up the slope sit above it and behave quite differently. Riverside streets bring their own question — flood risk history, which decides how high plant and controls should be mounted rather than whether the design works at all.
We would rather build those local realities into the design temperature and the siting than discover them in the second winter. It is exactly the sort of detail a national installer working from a postcode lookup has no way of knowing.
